24 Jun (Sun): FREE Singapore Heritage Society Booth

Featuring "Finding 818K Kampung Surau", this exhibition consists of 4 illustrated panels which traces Syawzan’s journey of uncovering his past from when he first learned about his family’s history on Ubin to the time he first set eyes on what remained of House 818K, Kampung Surau.
Visitors are invited to engage with Sywazan in conversations about his journey, his reflections, in the context of the contemporary tension between heritage conservation and modernisation in Pulau Ubin.

This is the story of 21 year old Nor Syazwan Bin Abdul Majid who recently learned about his family’s history in Ubin which ended 30 years ago even before he was born.

The booth will feature personal stories and photos as shared with Syazwan by his mother, of her growing up years with his maternal grandparents and the extended family. Stories which capture the relationships in a home which is now no more. What remains physically of the family home, is the imprint of 818K Kg Surau in Pulau Ubin. This is Syazwan’s journey to uncover the once vibrant family life in a Kampung community, which he had missed. And in so doing raises questions on the contemporary tension between heritage conservation and modernisation in Pulau Ubin.
